Kováts Judit

kovats_judit-0-274x181I make a plate, then I throw a ball form into its center, because in this way the heating surface of the stove will be bigger. Then I shape into quadratic form by a wooden frame. This stove of the workshop was started to construct at a summer camp. We were four to throw it. Maybe a year had passed when the 250 tiles were completed. The balls can tell me who of ours made it.

They are so different: flat and broad, of big ball, cute small circular, tool or fingernail scraped. The stove was originally designed for round, and Benedek Nagy, the sculptor suggested this oval form, because in this way it does not take too much space. It is nice and working well. We are using it for 24 years and no need to rebuild till now.

I come to the pottery workshop every day even in winter to work with the wheel. I like to be here. I fill the stove, then the feeding-tables of the birds. The birds are swarming that time. I am just standing at the window, making photos. Rare and interesting species are often found there at the table. For a time I passionately ‚collected‘ them, we organized an exhibition of the bird photos.

It was 30 years ago. The ruinous well-house of the Lamberg Mansion of Mór was just in demolition, when the representatives of the local government and Mr. Benedek Nagy, sculptor decided to save the small Baroque building. It succeeded to rebuilt, using local funds and a lot of social work. The well itself was backfilled up to two metres, having a concrete bottom. Now there is the clay storage. In handing up the roof tiles I helped as well.

I am alone in the workshop, with my dog Kóbor (‘Rover’). It lives here. But I am not lonely. In the park people come and go, sometimes they visit me. Friends, former trainees, visitors come to talk.” Now it is winter, peace and quiet. The house is deliciously warm, the baked potato is snifty, and we are sipping hot tea. It is good to be here.
